A 14 genderless pieces collection with a multicultural theme focused on my design philosophy - simplicity and functionality. In this project, I combined Western suit culture with traditional Chinese ink painting.

The XAY FANG collection is based on the theme multicultural and “gender quality,” and my design thinking is simplicity and functionality. During the brainstorming phase, my goal was to combine Western suit culture as a symbol of masculinity with traditional Chinese ink painting as a symbol of femininity. As the design developed, I simplified the curved silhouette and followed the trajectory of Chinese ink painting garments, layer by layer. On the other hand, to meet the etiquette requirements of Western-style clothing, I chose to use clean stitching, closures and finishing to reflect its decency and elegance in different layers. In the final product, I added some patchworks to cross ink painting patterns on the suits to bring traditional and modern aesthetics together. In this collection, I not only established the intersection of Eastern and Western aesthetics, but also embraced the concept of "gender equality" and cultural communication, which shows the power of design in neutrality.

Reflection

In this project, I conducted a wide range of research on Western and eastern Cultures, showing the design process of garments and the visual presentation of cultural exchange. The goal of this project was to combine my knowledge of Eastern culture with my exploration of Western culture and have the two integrate together in fashion.

Since my focus was on multicultural and creative thinking in fashion, I had to gather information and create a lot of design drafts. Gathering information and sketches is not inherently a difficult process, but the most challenging part was to make the designs themselves express the intersection of cultures. This was not only the main achievement of my personal project, but also the communication and elevation of traditional culture.

Among the finished products other than the clothes, the pattern was a huge success. I definitely feel that the combination of the pattern and the suit really expresses my design philosophy and cultural exchange. This design is a combination of traditional and modern, which is in fact what I was aiming for. Completing my personal project has been a great learning experience. I learned how complex the fashion industry is and nowadays’ cultural communication’s elevation and barriers.
