During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I realized my grandparents, particularly my grandfather who lives alone in Shanghai, were facing severe shortages. Unable to navigate online grocery platforms during mandatory quarantine, he struggled to access essential items. Witnessing this, along with similar stories worldwide, motivated me to explore the technological challenges the elderly face.

In a rapidly evolving digital world, many elderly individuals struggle to adapt to new technologies. This challenge became especially critical during the pandemic, particularly for those living alone who need support to maintain their independence.

User Research

I conducted moderated user interviews and surveys to better understand the needs of elderly

users who have difficulty with technology, but also all users in general.

6 participants, including my grandmother and grandfather who struggled with getting access

to groceries while quarantined in Shanghai.

15 participants, ranging from 30-60 years old.

Competitor apps include Daily Fresh, Yong Hui Life and Da Run Fa Life. These applications are aimed directly at users who are familiar with technology. As a result, this creates difficulties for users that are unfamiliar with technology.


I created a competitor graph, competitor list and competitor interaction to show their benefits and drawbacks.

While designing high fidelity mock ups, I did research on accessibility: the standard fonts certified on cell phones are generally 12-14 pixels. In order to help users with reading difficulties, the basic font in TapGo is 18 pixels.
